A native of Eau Claire, Dr. Joe Theisen attended the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire and went on to receive his dental education at the University of Marquette in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After serving in the United States Air Force, he returned to his hometown of Eau Claire, where he currently maintains a private practice.
Dr. Theisen is an avid believer in continuing education and averages over 75 hours of study courses per year. In May of 2007 he received certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) by the American Heart Association. This training supports his recent training in conscious sedation, an addition to our practice that helps him meet the needs of those with severe dental anxiety. In his early years under the mentorship of Dr. Bob Lee, Dr. Theisen met and studied with many of the educators who were on the cutting edge in developing treatment techniques widely used in dentistry today. Dr. Theisen, a firm proponent of the idea that “everyone can improve with a coach,” now does his part to keep that tradition of hands-on education alive, having in the past served as a preceptor and trained students from Marquette University in his office.
Recently, Dr. Theisen participated in a year-long study course, spending four weekends in Dallas, Texas to discuss issues in dental care with a prestigious group of 33 hand-picked dentists from across the United States. He notes that this “Mastermind Program” was the first study meeting that required him to complete an application (16 pages long!) before he could attend. In the course of the program, the assembled doctors discussed problems, ideas, and creative solutions in order to advance the practice of quality dentistry. Dr. Theisen considers this year of intimate interaction a life-changing experience, and he is proud to incorporate his learning into his dental practice for your benefit.
The “Mastermind Program” was structured on the principle that “All of us are smarter than one of us” — a philosophy that Dr. Theisen actively promotes in his dental practice. He welcomes second opinions and is more than happy to provide the same to others. In addition, he makes it a point to surround himself with great people, including his highly-trained staff, the first class dental artists of Dental Crafters Laboratory (Bob, Brad, and Jack Slomanski), and the network of dental specialists Dr. Theisen trades referrals and works with on a daily basis. This broad pool of resources helps our practice stand out from the crowd in the practice of general dentistry and cosmetic dentistry. Please contact our practice today to discuss what Dr. Theisen and his associates can do to make you smile.
After Hours
Dr. Theisen is married to Fay, who works with him daily as a dental assistant at his practice. They have 8 children and 18 grandchildren, allowing them to savor a full schedule of recitals, plays, track meets, wrestling matches, soccer matches, football games, basketball games, and more. Watching their own children grow and become productive contributors to society — as social workers, teachers, engineers, doctors, lawyers, etc. — is one of the greatest sources of satisfaction in their lives.
Dr. Theisen takes due note of the fact that the word recreation can be broken down as “re-creation.” Golf is his and his wife’s preferred means of regrouping quickly in the short term, but their true pride and joy is their cabin in the woods of northern Wisconsin. At this family-built getaway along the Chippewa River, they enjoy hunting, snow-shoeing, cross country skiing, reading books, and just relaxing by the open fire. Every time they go and return they find themselves newly rested and ready for the day-to-day challenge of running a modern dental practice.

One final element setting the practice of Dr. Joe Theisen apart is the quality of his office facility and the patient-friendly amenities it offers. Every aspect of our business is geared towards making safe, comfortable, high-quality dental care available to you without excessive financial burden. We accomplish this multifaceted goal through the use of advanced sedation techniques, stringent cleaning policies, and flexible financing plans.
Sedation is one of the great advances in modern dental care. We use both traditional nitrous oxide and newer, pill-based medication to help you put the fear and anxiety associated with the dentist out of your mind. These forms of conscious sedation leave you awake but relaxed, allowing you to drift and enjoy yourself while we perform the dental procedures you need. One major advantage of this approach is that it lessens the disorientation and nausea sometimes associated with general anesthesia while retaining many of its anxiety-reducing benefits. As a result, sedation is becoming an ever more popular choice for dental patients everywhere.
Increased comfort at the dentist’s office is possible even without sedation. In fact, we sometimes wonder why dental practices haven’t always been more attentive to patient comfort. That’s why we offer blankets for warmth, as well as music players with headphones and TVs with VHS and DVD players to patients who’d like to enjoy a little diversion during the course of their treatment. Feel free to bring in your favorite CD or DVD so that you can have it playing during your visit.
Secondary infections can force patients receiving even routine dental work to go through a lengthy recovery process. That’s why Dr. Joe Theisen and his staff adhere to a high standard of cleanliness. The procedures we follow, all of which conform to Center for Disease Control guidelines, help to eliminate potentially harmful bacteria and other microorganisms from the patient care environment. We heat sterilize our instruments and handpieces and make sure to wear all appropriate masks, gowns, and eye protection equipment. All of our disinfectants are ADA-approved. This strict set of sterilization rules ensures that our patients can trust us to treat their mouths without putting the rest of their bodies at risk.
Dr. Joe Theisen embraces the diverse array of new technologies that improve the experiences of his dental patients. Intraoral cameras allow him to examine minute details of the patients’ mouths and even share those images with the patients themselves. At 25 times their actual size, you’ll be amazed at how sharply you can discern the tiny features of your teeth and gums. We also utilize the CAESY® computerized patient education system so that you can acquire extensive information on any dental procedures that you are interested in undergoing. These advances in dentist-patient communication make modern dentistry more people-friendly than ever.
A major part of our effort to make high quality dental care available to as many clients as possible is our flexible payment system. We accept cash, personal checks, and all major credit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. A number of financing plans are available for those who would like to pay for their treatment in monthly installments with low interest rather than all at once. Among them are ALL Care, Healthcare Creditline and the Dental Fee Plan. If you are interested in taking advantage of one of these extended payment options, please let us know in advance so that we can make the necessary arrangements.
To experience the benefits of all these comfort-increasing measures for yourself, please contact us for a free consultation today, and someone will get back to you as soon as possible.
To increase your convenience and streamline the operations of our office, we offer printable forms for new patients online in .PDF format. If you would like, please print out the forms below prior to your first visit and have them filled out when you come in. Of course, we’d be happy to give you copies to fill out upon your arrival if you prefer. Either way, we look forward to the opportunity to make you smile.
